Why learn the gestures which save

Chances of survival increased with the first rescuer and defibrillation
Many scientific studies have proven the interest of the first rescuer during the chain of survival. The Red Cross experts believe “that if the rescue of the first moment is quickly relayed by specialised relief, among others equipped with semi-automatic defibrillation devices, the chances of survival for a victim of cardiac arrest are increased by 20%”. On the other hand, “If this first first-aider is absent from the place of the accident, these chances down to 2-3 %”.

The European Resuscitation Council, scientific organization that makes recommendations on managing emergencies at the European level, encourages a greater use by rescuers or even by specific audiences, these defibrillators portable, capable of delivering an electric shock to revive a failing heart.

Indeed, to be effective, an electric shock should be administered within the first 5 minutes following the cardiac arrest. However, in major cities, relief only arrived on the scene only after at least 10 minutes. The dissemination of these devices police and firefighters of course, but the people in contact with the public as the air staff would preserve still more lives.

The organisation of relief
Relief are organized in France in a complementary manner between the UAS and SMUR, firefighters and volunteers including the French Red Cross rescuers.”Schematically, firefighters support the emergency on a daily basis while the 60,000 stations that puts in place every year the Red Cross with the assistance of its 30,000 rescuers speakers more readily for a purpose preventive in the evening and on weekends, for example at sporting events or concerts”, explains Dr Pascal Cassan, national Commissioner in charge of training at the French Red Cross first aid. About 200,000 people are thus rescued each year by the Red Cross.

In case of emergency, to which number call: 15 or 18?
Act advises to call the UAS (15) in case of illness and emergency and fire (18) accident, “but this difference is sometimes difficult to perceptible to the public”, says Pascal Cassan.

However, the strong point of the 15 is to have the phone immediately if necessary physician and should therefore be preferred if one is looking for medical advice. In fact, in many areas, the services are fully interconnected.
For example, after 15call, regulating doctor sends a team of resuscitators of the UAS if discomfort is severe, or a team of responders (firemen, Red Cross…) if it seems less serious. In other cases, it will simply advise calling a liberal doctor when the problem is medical.
